okay, maybe i'm being picky.

when quoting someone, i have no issues with the period belonging on the inside of the quotation mark:

He looked at the cloudy sky and said matter-of-factly, "Wow, it's a nice day out."

But for as long as i remember, it's always bothered me that the period also belongs on the inside of a quotation mark when they are used out of that context, such as for emphasis or for Special Objects:

He looked at the sofa and wondered why it was dubbed "The Love Machine."

or:

The article was entitled "The Truth Behind The Lies."

I mean, if i'm going to use bold to emphasise something (That was perfect.), i don't make the period bold, and if I use underline for a title of a book (I saw she was reading _Ender's_Game_. (sorry... no HTML tag for underline), i don't underline the period.

so why does the period belong inside the quotation mark?

*grumbles for no reason*

That point of grammar has plagued my mind from time to time. I'm sure that some day I'll corner someone with an English degree to get a satisfactory explanation.

I suppose that I could reach over and thumb through my 'Chicago Manual of Style'... nah.

yeah, but my understanding is that the underline tag isn't strict html without the use of a stylesheet, and i can be picky about that stuff for absolutely no good reason at all. :p

besides... maybe LJ uses a style sheet anyway. i should just relax.

And then what if you're asking a question about it:
Was she reading "Ender's Game?" There's no question about the title... it makes even less sense.
