jan pub ent #2: severe oversimplification

so this is a severe oversimplification, for which i apologise. it comes somewhat from lack of sleep, lack of time to write it out properly, and lack of the idea being formed completely in my head.

having worked with and interacted with so many people of so many different ages (and backgrounds, but that's tangental) from middle school to high school to undegrad, to grad, to adults in the corporate world, to twenty-somethings that never went to college and are in the working world instead, etc. etc. i've discovered something.

there are in general two different kinds of people when it comes to maturity: those that learn how to actually Be Mature, and those that learn how to mask their immaturity to make it seem like they're mature.

of course i'm ignoring the whole "aspects of a person which are more mature than others" sort of thing, but that's for another exploration. I point this bit out because the people that grow into full adults that are much better at hiding their immaturity have had so much time to develop that skill that it's easy to mistake it for actual Maturity, and it's startling to discover after deeper probing that i've taught high school kids that are more mature than they are.

And then there are those of us who are searching for the immaturity inside of them. We know it's there somewhere, and think it'd be fun to let it out every once in a while... If we could just find it. :)

i'm placing a distinction between "holding onto youth" and "immaturity" in this case.

but maybe more thoughts on that later. busy busy work day.

I am too, in a way.. Unfortunately, the english language doesn't have words to match the subtle nuances we both want to express. And I'm too tired to try assembling them creatively.

there are two different kinds of people in this world. those who think there are two different kinds of people in this world, and those who are smart enough to know better.

(oh and then there are those who are somewhat mature, but can't manage to keep their foot out of their mouth long enough to ACT it. not that i'm talking about me or anything.)
