regardless.

i'm very picky about what sort of opera i like. like steve reich, i find that the operatic style of 'bel canto' is something that has historical significance that i appreciate, but can be supplemented with technological alternatives today that makes the necessity of that style greatly reduced.

that said, you have to give props for an individual who maybe didn't exactly make opera 'mainstream' but whose name is synonymous with opera to almost anyone you would ask off the street. "pavarotti? yeah, isn't he that opera singer?"

that that statement now has to be placed in past tense as opposed to present does not in any way diminish his legacy.
