DDR Experimentation

I messed around in Edit Mode today to see how DDR could handle tenor drumming licks.

Basically i just took Holic and wrote four or so measures of arrow patterns and then tried to play them, first with just the PS2 controller, then with my hands on a soft pad, then with a pair of tenor felts on the soft pad. The PS2 controller was pretty successful. Hands on the soft pad, moderately successful. tenor felts... problematic.

I'm going to steal a crappy set of bass drum mallets from Willamette to see if that will have better results, but i'm worried that #1 or #2 bass drum mallets won't work that well, and if it gets to a point where i have to use #3 or greater bass drum mallets, playing fast complex rudiments will be difficult.

If this whole thing works, the next thing i have to worry about is the issue of notation. Right now i'm using Just The Pads as beating spots - i'm not using any of the metal. Not a big deal... it's like writing for tri-toms with a gock drum. This is what i've written for Holic so far:

The problem will come when i want to use the metal as space to play too (especially now that i know that DDR Edits can't do 24th notes or 32nd notes)... that means there are 9 spots i'd have to notate in a context where the most i've ever had to notate is six. I could try to use x noteheads, but which space to assign x's would be somewhat arbitrary. I could use the lines and spaces, but i've tried to read concert tom music like that and it's awkward for me. i suppose i could get used to it.

Of course, i could just bypass the notation aspect of it altogether, but then i'd be the only one who could play it. It'd be neat if i could create an edit and have a decent tenor player play the edit with me in versus mode.

Just germs of ideas.
