So Lawrence Miles did a review of the latest Doctor Who Episode (4.03, Planet of the Ood), and it's absolutely fantastic, commenting much less about the individual episode overall but the contrast between telly back in the time of classic Who and what technology and the desire to make everything bigger and sleeker has done to TV culture, perceived audience expectations, and actual audience expectations.

give it a read if you like. it's long, but it's worth it.

Yay, someone who can verbalize what's wrong with TV these days. I just can't stand to watch it. What's odd is, people who've been watching right along don't notice a lot of things that really annoy me, like the shaky camera stuff. I go, "Augh, that makes me nauseous!" "What does?" "That stupid trick of shaking the camera around to make things look all 'intense.'" "What?" And the dialogue - or lack thereof! Every single line is exactly what you'd expect. Nothing delicate, nothing nuanced with the particular character's personality - no, let's just move the plot along exactly how it should be.

Oh dear, I'm no good at talking about it. That's why he's the reviewer, not I. :)

Oh, but I meant to say - do you think the study group would like that piece? There do seem to be a lot of people on there who are interested in learning more about things like that.
