ginger ale

so i discovered last night that ginger ale is a regional drink. as in, when the topic of ginger ale came up last night at the poker table, several, and i mean *several* people who are new orleans natives had no idea what it was.

i was astounded.

mostly a southern thing i think. there was a lot of good ginger ale in oregon, and i know it was everywhere in pennsylvania. i didn't know that it was an uncommon thing in the south.

Northern Beverage. The further south you go from Canada the less likely the locals are to have heard of, and furthermore enjoy ginger ale.

My Canadian family is apeshit for it...it's like diet coke to them. I see it or hear references to it maybe once every 4 months down here in California. Maybe.

An ex-bf who was from the New Orleans area once told me that southerners tend to call all soft drinks "cola", even when it wasn't. I wondered about that since Dr Pepper is so popular in the south. Plus, wouldn't that be confusing if you went to a restaurant?

Luckily, I'm an ice tea drinker and only had to deal with "sweetened or unsweetened" when in the US.

I had heard of it, but didn't know exactly what it was until 2006 or so.

I loved it upon tasting it for the first time and felt so sad that I had never had it before.

I should probably put a shameless plug for the new Canada Dry/Green Tea drink that is out now. It's ridiculously refreshing.
