small clues to deep traits.

whether serious or joking, you always hear about these small things that establish large traits. The easiest example i an come up with is the "how do you interlock your hands together?" question, the answer being something like "if your left thumb is over your right, you're a good lover. If your right thumb is over your left, you're a good thinker. if your put your thumbs next to each other, you think you're a good lover."

recently things like this have manifested itself in my thoughts as it relates to straws. I'm one of those sorts of people that rips open the top of the paper that holds the straw to get the straw out. Other people i know take the bottom of the straw and hit it against a surface so that the straw bursts out of the top. I feel like this could be some other sort of silly "deeper personality trait" sort of thing, like maybe the person who hits it against the surface is more aggressive or assertive or impatient or something, while the straw top ripper is more passive or more careful, the sort that will always cut an orange with a knife instead of digging into it with a fingernail.

so i put this out to ye of LJ lore since i don't put out nearly enough polls:

Poll #1390859 getting a straw out of its wrapper

How do you release a straw from its paper wrapper?

i rip open the top and then take the straw out.
9(32.1%)
i hit the bottom of the straw against a surface so that the straw itself rips open the paper.
5(17.9%)
i do both.
6(21.4%)
i have no idea; i never pay attention.
1(3.6%)
other. (please explain in comments)
7(25.0%)

What theories do you have about personality type as it relates to straw-wrapper liberation choice?

Ripping open the top of the wrapper to pull the straw out also makes it easier to shoot the wrapper at someone else by blowing into the straw with the wrapper still on. ^^

Gah. Down with Boros!

Also, I'd just like it to be known that I made my comment in the poll before I read this.

deeper personality trait: if you shoot the straw paper into someone's eye you are IRRITATING.

I think you might be on to something there, heh. I'm definitely more passive and careful, and I also simply rip the top of the paper. Even moreso, I'm careful to try to rip it only partially, so the whole paper is intact, rather than have a small piece ripped completely off. Wonder if there's a psyche-analysis to be had there.

I blame the Um Bongo ads when I was little for my tendency to bang the straw. Maybe, if I hadn't been overexposed to 'UM BONGO, UM BONGO, DEY DRINK IT IN DE CONGO!' at an impressionable age, I would've taken the gentler path of opening the straw at the top.

I tear off the wrapper about midway down the straw, pull the bottom half off and stick it in the drink before taking the top off. Why? 'cause my hands are usually dirty and I want to drink my soda before I wash them. :)

I tend to rip a band of paper away about 1" from the end of the wrapper, pull the straw out by the 1" paper cap, put into drink, and remove cap.

I do this because I thought it looked nifty at a restaurant (There it was for hygiene so nobody ever touched your straw) and started doing it myself.

In any case, I appreciate you validating my belief that I'm a good lover. :)

As human beings, we want to put meanings on things. "Your being late means you don't care...or it means you were taking your time to make sure you arrive prepared." The trick is to find out if there is a pattern between the two for people. And even then it may not be true since a behavior as simple as how you open a straw can be relearned without really changing the beliefs and values underneath.

As further proof of that, I don't know if you were serious with this post or if you were kidding :p

Sometimes I rip off the top, sometimes I smack it on the table, sometimes I carefully peel of the tab thingie that runs all the way down the side. Then some times I crumple it, shoot/throw it at someone I'm with, fold it up, tie it in a knot, a couple knots, or mess with it in some other way. Some semblance of multiple personality disorder on my part? ;)

(Just tested....left thumb over right... score one for me)

I just jab the straw into the drink, wrapper and all.

:)

No. But I do it slightly different. I do tear a bit off the top, but then proceed to tear lengthwise down the straw.

What if I *used* to do it a different way? What would that mean? Change? CHANGE?!

I rip open the top and blow the wrapper off. If it doesn't fly off, I then just take the straw out. ^_^ No...I don't blow it across the room (unless there's an easy target). It's generally a gentle puff.

I whack the straw on a hard surface so the top pops out. Then I remove it with my teeth (unless I'm in company I wish to impress, then I do something less barbaric).

I don't know what the teeth thing means.
