replacing air bags with an air force

i've never been in an accident that involves the deployment of air bags, so i can't say whether or not they're the sort of thing that qualifies as "gets the job done but could be done in a better way." but the other day i had a funny idea.

suppose instead of an airbag, you had an "air force". Upon impact, a computer in the car calculates the speed you were traveling, the sudden stop in speed, angle, &c, and then creates a quickly accelerating force of air that stops your momentum. the quickly accelerating force of air lessens the amount of potential whiplash or rough impact because it slows down your momentum rapidly as opposed to brute force stopping it.

not particularly cost-effective, what if the mechanism for the air force gets damaged upon impact, yadeyade. but it'd still be cool to see.
