memories awakening during dreaming

sometime a couple of weeks ago, mark told me that he had a very vivid dream of himself back when he marched in the Cavaliers in 1991. I forget if he said it was a performance or if it was a practice, but he remembers in the dream running through the show and playing all of the parts. When he woke up, he said that while he was dreaming he remembered very clearly all of the parts he played and knew that what he was doing was right despite the fact that he doesn't actually remember any of those parts any more in his conscious brain.

last night something similar happened to me, but more convoluted, particularly because now that i'm awake, as per normal, i don't remember anything specific about it at all. but what i *can* remember is the sensation of memory within the dream. First of all, i remember that in the dream i was asleep and woke up from dreaming (a dream within a dream), which as far as i know is the first time this has ever happened to me, but isn't too significant since i've watched inception a bunch recently. not a far stretch. But the other thing i remember was that when i woke up in the dream and started to go through the dream, i was aware that i was dreaming and was aware that i had dreamt this before, but it was the first time that i had dreamt this specific dream in probably over a decade.

and i remember feeling that it was delightful. It was an amazing discovery, like seeing the most meaningful person in my life for the first time in over a decade. it was so sharp and detailed, and i relished it and let it attack my senses in seemingly new but actually familiar ways.

i don't know how long the dream went on for, but it felt like a while. when i woke up, i woke up slowly. As my mind went into half-consciousness from sleep to wake, i remember telling myself "don't forget this one" which has a rate of about 30% of success (and yeah, it didn't work), but also all of these thoughts rapidly popped into my head the entire time i was waking up, vivid thoughts about past experiences, past lovers, thoughts of the future, imagined conversations. that lasted for a good minute before i finally became completely awake, and then practically all of it left my memory except for the impression of it, the wonder of it.

it was absolutely fantastic. it's such a rarity for me to have a dreaming experience like that. i'd have liked it better if i could remember the actual dream, but i'll take what i can get. i'm not too picky when it comes to life. at least i don't think so.

Cavaliers? I think my brother, Hawk, marched with them in... 1986, maybe? I'll have to ask him.

Ah, no, sorry, I was wrong, I just double-checked: He marched with the Boston Crusaders ~against~ the Cavaliers. ;) He says he has no conscious memories of any shows, though, because he was in a zone when performing.

aaah. crusaders were pseudo-rivals of the corps i marched in back in the day. not so much anymore, the drum corps scene has changed a lot in the past couple of decades. :)
