the verizon experiment

so the data from my verizon experiment is still ongoing, but there's been some interesting results so far.

when i first started it two weeks ago, i actually wasn't receiving a whole lot of the auto-notifications that i had set up, but it turned out that that issue was more likely a google calendar bug rather than a verizon bug since at the time when i would miss notifications i'd be able to send myself texts from my AT&T phone to my verizon phone with no problems.

sometime maybe a week ago, i started getting the notifications i had set up on a more regular basis, and that's when the data became more reliable. in the middle of this, it seemed like verizon had figured some of their issues out because i was also consistently getting texts more frequently when i was supposed to, although there was still the odd drop here and there.

because of how many text messages i'm allowed to keep on my phone, i deleted a bunch of the google calendar texts, but i did save days in which there was unexpected hiccups in my notifications. The data looks something like this:

  • Tuesday March 8th:
    • 10:00 - on time
    • 12:00 - completely dropped
    • 14:00 - on time
    • 16:00 - on time
    • 18:00 - on time
    • 20:00 - delayed 15 minutes
    • 22:00 - completely dropped
  • Wednesday March 9th:
    • 10:00 - late by two minutes
    • 12:00 - on time
    • 14:00 - on time
    • 16:00 - on time
    • 18:00 - on time
    • 20:00 - delayed 1 hour, 20 minutes
    • 22:00 - on time
  • Thursday March 10th and Friday March 11th:
    • all on time
  • Saturday March 12th:
    • 10:00 - on time
    • 12:00 - on time
    • 14:00 - on time
    • 16:00 - on time
    • 18:00 - on time
    • 20:00 - delayed 25 minues
    • 22:00 - on time
  • Sunday March 13th:
    • 10:00 - delayed 25 minutes
    • 12:00 - on time
    • 14:00 - on time
    • 16:00 - on time
    • 18:00 - on time
    • 20:00 - on time
    • 22:00 - TBD

i don't think there's anything that can be *really* concluded about the data, but at least shows that the inconsistency exists. i'm not sure what to do about it; based on a post i put up on the neworleans community, people speculated based on phone replacement that it was an old tech vs. new tech issue (although no one drew the conclusion that i did that it had to do with the iPhone release). i don't really want to get a new phone since my 2 year discount is only 2.5 months away, so i may just try to deal with the issue until then and hope that nothing important gets dropped.

i think i may ramp up the notifications to an hour to see if i can get any better trending data. it will be kind of annoying to deal with it from an archiving perspective, but it feels like the right thing to do to hone down on the data more completely and see how truly f'ed i am, which could make me decide to jump the gun on the 2-yr promotion if it's really bad. we'll see.
