So once Tyler gets stepmania running on his machine, he's planning on having a "DDR Sight Read" tourney. In a nutshell, entrants will be playing songs and/or charts that no one has ever seen before.

I've been "hired" to help him write charts for this thing, and it's an exciting prospect, but we both know that's it's also going to be a *lot* of work. Clearly we could just write new charts to DDR or IIDX songs, but the problem with that is a lot of people already know those tunes... even if they've never seen the chart before, they have some level of comfort from knowing those songs' characteristics and can anticipate what the charts will be. Especially the way I write charts, where all of my steps are based on something found in the music.

Which leaves the other option of finding good non-bemani tunes to use. which is fine, except that i'm *really* picky about tunes that I think has good step chart potential. I've been perusing my CD collection and the pickings are slim. Out of 150 or so CDs i've browsed already, i've found four tunes that I think will work.

The other problem is that most non-bemani tunes don't fit in the minute and a half time frame that we want to keep for the charts. Which means i have to make edits. Which, because i'm a picky bastard, takes me a loooooooooong time.

Luckily, two of the four songs i've found so far are both about 1:15 long, so i didn't have to do any audio editing. So those charts were easy to rattle off in three or four composition sessions.

But sooner or later i'm going to have to bite the bullet and find a decent regular-length tune and go through the work of editing. Not looking forward to it.

A side upshot of this whole process is that I've gone back and started listening to some of my old CDs that i don't listen to anymore and i'm discovering that i like them again. It's been years since i've seriously listened to anything by Front Line Assembly or Intermix... some of the stuff still bores me now, but some of it kicks ass.

It makes me want to take all of the stuff i like and consolidate it into one CD or one playlist and then get rid of the CDs so i don't have to listen to the bad stuff to find the good stuff that i forgot about.

something like that anyway. i'm loopy from still being only vaguely awake and lots of dayquil.
