*knocks* Hello? Is anyone there? Hello?
Jun. 23rd, 2005 05:09 pm (UTC)
hi Mendel, this is Katie's friend, Stephanie. I was bored and snooping around, so I thought I'd say hi! :) Do you mind if I add you? Hope you're doing well!

sounds good to me. my journal is pretty boring, though.

sorry to hear about your grad school woes. i'm flabbergasted by it all. they all suck. i seriously wonder if you're victim to reverse discrimination. you should have put "pacific islander" on your apps.

cool! :) Yeah, about school, you're not the only one who suspects a case of reverse discrimination. A couple professors who I'm close to have been doing some research into what happened, and they think the admissions committee may have taken all the international students first, then the minorities, and by the time they did that there was no room for anyone else. The psychology department prides itself on being very ethnically and racially diverse, but there should be a balance. There is a student from Spain, with fewer qualifications and a lower UO undergraduate GPA than I have, who was accepted. I definitely think it's time to reconsider my career path, but at least I'm still young.

personally i'm of the opinion that it doesn't hurt to try applications again next year. it's good to have a backup plan and decide to do something different, but if you have the money, apply to your top three or four schools for the academic year following. that way you can still go with what you have if it doesn't pan out, but you can go back to your field if you still have the inclination.

In fact, if you do have the money to apply, you might apply to your other "lower" choices. I don't know about psychology, but in other fields it doesn't ALWAYS matter where you got the degree, just that you got it. Of course, the main point then, with a degree from a "lesser" institution, would be to get real world experience so as to negate the necessity of a degree entirely.

Hi, I'm new by the way.
Aug. 17th, 2005 05:19 am (UTC)
hi. nice to meet you. who is this?
Aug. 17th, 2005 12:05 pm (UTC)
I'm an out of work musician in Houston. It seems like these days that's pretty much all I am.
Aug. 18th, 2005 06:21 am (UTC)
Sorry, I didn't mean to sound so depressing. I am actually quite optimistic, just not at the moment.
Aug. 18th, 2005 02:23 pm (UTC)
no worries. sapientnox didn't see it anyway because you replied to the wrong part of the comment.

i'm still trying to figure out the mystery of who you are. Do i know you personally, or did you happen to come across my journal or what?
Aug. 19th, 2005 04:52 am (UTC)
I just saw that you were a musician and skimmed some of your stuff. That's all.
Aug. 19th, 2005 07:35 pm (UTC)
ah. that's cool. not nearly as interesting, but cool nonetheless. :)

nice to meet you. strangers always welcome. just don't get me in trouble. ;)
