more interviews...

Again, for those that don't know the rules....

1. Leave a comment saying you want to be interviewed.

2. I'll reply and give you five questions to answer.

3. You'll update your LJ with the five questions answered.

4. You'll include this explanation.

5. You ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed. And it just keeps going, and going, and going (hopefully!).

These questions came from perkyfreak29.

1. If you could live anywhere, where would you live and why?

The first-level answer is that I'd like to live somewhere where there aren't a lot of extreme temperatures, either high or low. I'm not a big fan of snow, nor am I a big fan of high heat. I do like some temperature variance, and i love rain and thunderstorms. Ethnic diversity and a generally liberal area is a plus. And somewhere where you can put your recycling out by the curb once a week. *shrug*

The deeper level answer is that I can't say exactly where i want to live because... i tend to be adaptive. I think that if i put my mind to it, i could live just about anywhere and find a way to make that location work for me.

2. Are you the person you thought you would be when you were 8?

*laughs* you want me to remember from twenty years ago how i thought i would end up twenty years from now?

i'm not sure if i had any notion of what i'd turn out to be back then. I can tell you i'm a very different person than i was back then, and that yeah, my life-path got riccocheted a few times into places i never thought i'd be. I always think about those key moments in my life, the ones that seem to have shaped who i am the most, like when i decided to march in drum corps, which strengthened my confidence, my teaching ability, my departure from Christianity, my work ethic, my love of running, etc. My relationship with Rebec' is another key part of my life, as well as my decision to become a music major and later a composition major.

3. Does life imitate art or art imitate life? Explain.

I'm not sure how much i've ever really thought about this. But my knee-jerk reaction is to say that neither is correct. It's too black and white. I think the relationship between life and art is a more organic idea, a push and pull. There are times when they can imitate each other. There are even times when life can imitate art imitating life, and vice versa. I think that's what makes it all so fascinating and makes me passionate about it.

4. What is the most beautifullest thing in the world?

wow. umm.... *ponders*

i'm not sure if i can answer this, so i'll pick "the human soul" as a controlled random.

5. Who is your personal role model? why?

Many people inspire me. Teachers and students alike inspire me. Friends and enemies inspire me. So sometimes pinpointing a role model can be a challenge.

I'd have to say that Rob Maggio fits in there as being a great role model and mentor for me when I was at West Chester, and even five or so years later, i can still feel his influence on me and my art. Jason Powell is also a great role model for me... i learned a lot about teaching from him. Steve Reich and John Adams are also great role models for me as prominent composers of new music. And although he's not a role model, exactly, John Cage is someone who i am always thankful for in helping bring the state of new music out of its detached and overanalyzed zeal of the post World War II era.

Okay. I think that's it.
