driving home

today on the way home, i was stopped on the light at 7th and washington. right at the front.

there was a guy on the corner with a sign. i didn't pay him much notice - pretty common corner for beggars, and i was preoccupied with my own sort of thoughts.

he said something, i don't know exactly what, that got my attention, so i looked at him. The sign he made said "Smile if you can."

he looked right at me. I looked back at him and gave him a typical mendel sort of half-smile smirk, a bit brighter than usual so he could see it. He gave me a bright grin back, put his thumb up in approval, and then turned to a different corner, satisfied that his job had been done.

it was exactly what i needed.

if the light hadn't turned green right then, i would have probably given him some money. as it was, i wss tempted to turn around and stop and chat with him, but i decided that the moment was perfect the way it was.

That's lovely!

There's a homeless guy here in Sydney who has a proper begging sign, but will always shout out 'smile' to people at random. It's very sweet.

I stood around in Pitt St. today giving away free hugs. That's a permanent smile-fixer for sure.

If everybody had moments like this more often, I think that the world would be a much happier place.

Or at least I'd be much happier reading my LJ friends list. :)

I have a Walmart customizeable license plate frame on my car that reads "HONK IF YOU <3 <3 COOKIES". You wouldn't BELIEVE how FEW people honk at me. I've had maybe two or three honk discretely, and one dude honk and wave at me. However, I have this feeling it's a social phobia of the implications of honking, or something... odd && offtopic
