The Outside of the Asylum

In Douglas Adams's So Long, and Thanks for All The Fish, there's a character named Wonko the Sane who determines that the world must be crazy because they need such detailed instructions on how to use a toothpick.

There must be something to this. Things of this nature may not necessarily mean that the world is crazy, but at the very least i think over a long period of time it will strip mankind of their intuition for common sense.

the real world example that sprung this to mind involves two observations i made while brushing my teeth. a) The toothpaste itself has the words "FOR BEST RESULTS, SQUEEZE TUBE FROM THE BOTTOM AND FLATTEN AS YOU GO UP" written in all caps and in red lettering (in contrast to the rest of the text which is blue) as if it needed to stand out, almost like a "warning" label. b) I cracked open a new toothbrush today. The packaging was your basic toothbrush packaging - clear plastic front so you can see the toothbrush (i imagine mainly so you can pick your color) that form-fits the toothbrush for compactness. When i opened it up, i noticed on the back, it had in prominent font size and color the words, "CONTAINS: 1 TOOTHBRUSH".

Well what did you expect me to think it contained? A vaccuum cleaner? Sheesh.

I love the 2.5 page description of Arthur as the Sandwich Maker and his knives/technique/etc in Mostly Harmless. I should read those again.

maybe it is to reassure you that it is in fact a toothbrush, and not, perhaps, a hairbrush. because if it were a hairbrush, it would mean you have grown quite a lot since you last checked and may have become a giant overnight. the toothbrush label serves to confirm that you are stick mendel-size. they do it just for you.
