cough cough

i decided to work from home today mainly because my throat was so pollen-infested from the weekend that i was hacking and coughing at least once every two minutes for the past day or two. i don't think it's contagious, but i'm sure it would have annoyed people and/or concerned people unnecessarily.

sometimes working from home is amazingly productive for me because i don't get distracted by office 'things', beit random chatter or small problems and etc. today was an amazingly unproductive day, mainly because my head felt like it was in the clouds the whole time. i'm not sure if it's the allergies or the allergy medication or what, but even though i slept a good part of the day yesterday and even took a nap today during lunch, the only real productive part of my work day today was this morning when i first woke up at 6:30. the rest of the day i felt mostly lethargic and brain dead and didn't want to do anything other than sleep.

which is unfortunate because i really wanted to get a good chunk done of the functional spec for my big work project, and now i'm really behind. i think since i wasted most of the day away i may do some work on it tonight. i doubt i'll feel comfortable playing poker with the lingering cough i have, and now that DSR Squared is over, my evenings are a lot more my own. maybe after i get some proper dinner in me i'll be more alert.

speaking of DSR Squared, it was a lot of work and energy for me, but it was still awesome, and i'm glad that tyler and i were able to put together something that would bring so many people back together. The neatest thing about running something like that is how it brings people to one space that would otherwise have nothing in common, and how such gatherings can make lasting friendships. In the same room we had people who were still in high school with people who were finishing up college with people who have full time jobs, people who have different sort of career paths or interests or personality types, and yet all of them felt comfortable around each other, brought together by this very silly game.

the other thing about this tournament that was interesting was the number of participants who don't really play DDR at all anymore and just entered for fun or for nostalgia. It was surreal in a good way, harkening back to the days of even before the first D2SSR, to the days of TOAST and the random EMU or ATAM tourneys or the Narrows tourneys that i went to.

at this point, i don't even remember the stress leading to this tournament, all i remember was the fun and the satisfaction of it coming together. which is good and bad. good because i feel good about what we put out there - tyler and i are a great force together. bad because it really does make me feel like doing another one when tyler and i had pretty much agreed beforehand that we probably wouldn't be able to pull this off again.

thanks to everyone who came out, and for those that missed it, you were severely missed.

Paraphrased from memory:

Me: Hey, yeah, you should ask your dad what he thinks about it now!
Tyler: Hey Dad, can I run a tournament here next year?
Tyler's dad: Now's not the best time to ask!

I was one of the lucky ones who wasn't suffering from allergies all weekend long. ^_^ Too bad I don't have the skill to have entered the tourney...I could have used that to my advantage. :p

Tournament or not, we should all flock to Eugene every other year, at the least.

I'll be up that way next summer, so I'm sure I'll see many of you again.

(Also might be up to other parts of PNW this fall. We shall see.)
