i just opened up my new mac pro for the first time because i'm putting in another hard drive to diagnose it for work. and at first i was confused. i saw the four hard drive bays, but i didn't see any cables to connect hard drives to the CPU.

so i pulled out one of the hard drives that's in the computer already with its easy-to-pull handle. No cables.

it's a slide-lock-plug system. you slide out the bay container, screw the hard drive into the bay container, then slide it back in. the hard drive connects via an interface at the rear that plugs in automatically when you slide the bay back into place.

pretty snazzy.

So what kind of pro did you get? I'm starting to shop for a new machine. Debating between the new iMac and a full pro. Curious what you found.

i got these specs:

one 2.66 ghz quad core
3x2gb memory
hard drive bay 1: 640gb 7200 serial ATA
hard drive bay 2: 1TB 7200 serial ATA
airport extreme wi-fi card with 802.11n

that would have come out to a $3k machine, but i got an employee discount from my friend who worked there, so it ended up being $2250.

i haven't tested it too hard yet - i just put some video editing software on there, we'll see how it passes the speed and endurance check for rendering and all that.

FFS an equivalent PC is like 1k.

yeah, but i generally dislike pcs for anything other than basic stuff. for my music programs and video editing programs and for the general interface, i'll stick with mac.

music programs and video editing programs</>

Mac OS is vanilla and Windows is chocolate (Linux and etc are the other flavors). You just like vanilla. :)

funny to hear you put it like that since when i first converted to mac form PC it was perceived the other way around.

the argument of music and video editing programs is less relevant than it used to be since PC has caught up to Mac for some of that software, but it's also the fact that i have too much invested in software and data files that are only compatible with Mac stuff that i own (Finale files, FCP files, audio editing sessions, Max/MSP) plus hard drives that i've had that still contain relevant mac data since my first mac back over ten years ago.

and i just like the Mac interface and paradigm better aesthetically. funny to hear you say it like that, because to me, Mac is the choclate and PCs are vanilla. The last windows operating system i can say that i Liked was Windows 98.

That is one slick machine, I need a new computer but sadly I don't have that kind of money to spend.

Nice buy, have fun with it.

don't crash in your new motorcycle. one of my former students is currently still in a coma after two weeks due to an accident involving a motorcycle she just bought. makes me much more wary of that shit than i used to be.

So far so good. You know me, I'm cautious as hell. If I wasn't afraid going into it, I am now -- every old biker I talk to is like "so did you crash yet?"

Dad says everyone lays down their bike at least once in their lives, but not usually at the very beginning.
