only in new orleans.

today's the first day of mardi gras. and you can tell.

i went out today to buy a costume for the parade that i'm going to be walking tonight, Krewedelusion, and the city was buzzing. I drove over to magazine and there was a lot of traffic and a lot of people just Out and About, the first real sign of spring. The police barricades were on Saint Charles, not set up, but "at the ready" for when they have to deal with parade flow and traffic flow.

i went into the costume shop, and it was filled with people. overcrowded, except not in a bad way, lots of people trying and buying, getting ready for the festivities.

on the drive home, just before Napolean Avenue, there was one block where a group of people had set up a croquet course along with a table/chair setup for a barbecue in the middle of the neutral ground, and people were eating, drinking, and playing croquet. One block later, i heard a high school snare line practicing, a southern style deep shell plastic sound playing some unmistakably new orleans style snare licks.

it's in the air. and it's fantastic. spring time in new orleans is like nowhere else, and i can't wait for it to happen.

Makes me nostalgic for the time I got arrested in NOLA on Mardi Gras night for stealing a broken parking meter. I was the only person in Central Lockup not there for D&D or drugs. Ah, good times...
