starbucks and the peas guy.

i don't go to starbucks often here. aside from not being a coffee drinker, the uptown starbucks is not on the side of uptown that i frequent because it's past my point of employ. But this morning after a doctor appointment, i had to head vaguely in that direction to drop off a prescription, so i decided to stop in and grab an iced tea and a pastry.

The person taking my order asked for my name so that she could put it on the cup. She asked for the spelling of it, which hardly ever happens. not that it matters to me because you can spell it like Bob if it sounds like Mendel to you when you call my name out for my order, but it was still neat that she asked at all.

The barista next to her who was cleaning out the espresso machine instantly asked, "do you get a lot of jokes about the peas guy?" and that was also neat because i'm pretty sure it's been years since anyone has asked about my name as it relates to the geneticist. it's not that i'm not introducing myself to strangers less often - i give my name out to others for orders and i introduce myself when someone asks at the poker table or elsewhere. I gave my pleasant sort of standard answer and then moved to the other side where the third barista was working on my actual iced tea order.

and before *that* barista handed me my tea, she asked me in a relatively quiet and somewhat shy voice, "is mendel your first or last name?" and when i responded, she then said, "oh, i was going to ask if you were related to Gregor Mendel." i looked at her face and it was clear that she hadn't heard the conversation at the cash register, so i said, "no, no" and because the context was slightly different, i gave the brief explanation as to why i *am* named Mendel to which she gave a bright smile and said, "oh that's cool."

and if only one of those things had happened, i wouldn't have thought much of it, but all of those things happening in quick succession made for a pretty pleasant and memorable experience, and it was important that i write it down while it was still fresh in my head. So here it is.

random query...
Just curious: are you familiar with the poker player Victoria Coren?

Re: random query...
not before you mentioned her. i think i've seen her host one or two poker things, but i wouldn't have recognized her. but i don't follow professional poker players like i probably should. :)

i gave the brief explanation as to why i *am* named Mendel to which she gave a bright smile and said, "oh that's cool."

And then you don't tell US what it is? That's cruel!

Marvellous peas-guy :D I've always wanted to tell the barista that my name is Stormageddon.

that would be fantastic.

when i was younger, i used to give my name as "bob" to simplify things. a few people who would take my order could read in my voice that i was giving a fake name and they would grin. it was kind of fun.
