past relationships rekindled

So today two nifty things happened.

First, i had a half-hour conversation with Michelle Koch, the first time we've really talked in maybe four or so years. I don't know how we managed to catch up on four years in a half hour, but we did. It felt good. it's nice to know that we can pick up in a relatively comfortable place from where we left off. especially with where i am mentally right now, i have a fair amount of confidence that we're going to always be great friends.

Second, Jennifer Higdon is in town this week. She's a composer that's picking up speed in the classical world. Two years ago the Philadelphia Orchestra premiered her Concerto for Orchestra which they commissioned her to write, and since then, it's gotten a lot of performances. It's being performed here on thursday.

I kind of know her because she came and talked to a bunch of us at West Chester when i was an undergrad. She's a good friend of Rob Maggio, my old comp professor at West Chester who i love and respect dearly.

So she gave a talk to the UofO composers today, and i snuck in (with the approval of David) and listened to her talk and participated. Afterward, i said hello and said, "yeah, we've met," and she said, "i *thought* i recognized you from somewhere!" and we chatted for a bit. She encouraged me to defy my dad and stick with my chosen path, even though it might be tough. I was already going to do that, but it was good to hear her say so and to relate some stories emphasizing that fact.

It's good to see that her professional career has really taken off. Hopefully i'll be able to keep in touch with her.

I've heard of Jennifer Higdon. Any recordings you'd recommend?

i only kind of know her music. i know her more as a person.

her concerto for orchestra seems kind of neat. there are some things i don't like about it, but it's got cool stuff in it.

Ein Minuten bitte...
Wait...your dad doesn't want you to be a composer? Aren't you named after a composer?

Re: Ein Minuten bitte...
yeah, but... *shrug* my parent's don't mind musical kids. my dad just doesn't think i'll be able to have a stable future in composition. umm... duh.
